Department Aims and Programmes:

The English Language and Literature curriculum aims to cultivate reflective thinkers. The students explore issues through research and reading in order to form an opinion.

The English Language and Literature curriculum aims to cultivate communicators. Students learn to communicate emotions and content in written as well as spoken language.

The English Language and Literature curriculum aims to cultivate listeners and readers. Students learn to sieve out important and relevant information from what they are listening to and reading.

The English Language and Literature curriculum teaches the skills that the students need to make sense of the knowledge that surrounds them as well as be participants in producing this knowledge.

The week-long IJ FLAIR –Festival of the Language and the Arts In Rhythm—hopes to show the girls the vibrancy of language and its uses such as in communication, driving change and entertaining. The department enrichment programmes such as storytelling and poetry slam along with platforms for communications such as Speakers’ Corner, Heard in IJ and Women as Agents of Change all contribute to the IJ girl loving and appreciating the English Language and Literature and recognising this strength as part of her IJ identity.
